We are excited to announce the addition of cellular visualizations into the Airwave platform!

Since the FCC established the first dedicated rules for the cellular band in 1981, the licensing model has undergone significant evolution. Initially, licenses were site-based, with coverage contours defined by the reach of multiple site locations, as per the regulations outlined in Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations: 47 CFR § 22.911.

In a major shift aimed at reducing regulatory burdens, increasing flexibility, and aligning regulations with other bands, many cellular licenses have transitioned to a geographic-based system. This change is elaborated in the FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Order: 12-20A1. Despite this, some licenses continue to operate within the original contour-based framework—a nuance the tool adeptly manages.

Airwave offers a unique integrated view of cellular licenses, color-coded by owner. For the first time, users can visually explore the ownership landscape and then delve into details by selecting a license to see the county-level licensed populations.

The visualization tool integrates seamlessly with the rest of the Airwave platform for deep analysis.
