The Potential Impairments Module

TeamBy the Airwave Team

This past week, we released the first version of the Airwave Potential Impairments module.

In late June, we discussed the 3.45 GHz coordination requirements with the Department of Defense. Besides the 3.45 GHz requirements, regulations mandate coordination over other bands or complete exclusion of activity in certain “quiet zones.”

A great example is the United States National Radio Quiet Zone, which restricts radio transmissions to protect sensitive scientific instruments from interference and safeguard Project Echelon (ECHELON).

This dataset is typically provided directly to operators by the federal government. However, we have aggregated NTIA listings indicating which locations have government facilities operating on a primary basis.

Now on the Portfolio Explorer, anytime you search over holdings, you can see estimations of the MHz-Pop’s under coordination or exclusion zones. In the Operator Holdings section, you can also see which bands are most affected by these potential impairments.

To explore the zones, go to the “Impairments” page on the sidebar, and visit the 3.45 GHz, Protected Zones, or Quiet Zones pages to see the affected areas and frequencies. You can select or search for any county to see which zones overlap.

This new functionality empowers operators and investors with a clearer view of regulatory zones, helping them navigate and optimize their operations with precision.
